The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall from August 19 to 21. The IMD attributes the severe weather to a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

The heavy rains have already disrupted operations at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), with vessel movements reported suspended on the 20th due to strong winds, poor visibility, and waterlogging. Berthing delays and irregular vessel schedules are exacerbating port congestion.

Road access to container freight stations (CFSs) has been obstructed by flooding. Empty container pickups are facing delays of 8-10 hours, while cargo movement between Maharashtra and Gujarat has slowed due to transit delays of 6-8 hours. The entry of loaded containers is also delayed by long queues, and buffer yards are nearly full due to a backlog of vessels.

The severe weather has also impacted rail and road transportation, with several railway lines and major highways submerged, disrupting the movement of both cargo and passengers.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with heavy rain expected to persist until Wednesday.
